WATER DAWGS - BLOOM
By Caspar Louis (@Caspar_Louis)
One of my favourite videos of the year… it’s not got anything mind-blowing or definitively unique about it, it’s just a refreshing aesthetic… the blues in the sky, the space… the architecture and the freedom of the body language. It’s a feel good audio and visual experience that doesn’t seem to be forced that way. Japanese group WATER DAWGS are here with their debut single BLOOM.
Now, the beat is the thing that I’m here for. Producer Y ohtrixpointnever (no relation to Oneohtrix Point Never, although I feel it might be a homage?) has some crazy sounds in his locker… it’s the kind of style of music I listen to all day long. Listen to his track 666videodays for example, really spacey lo-fi electronic hip hop style. I love it a lot.
The lyrical content is just pure positivity and feel good fuel. “Don’t think deeply, just seek fun stuff.” “You don’t have to match the colours like a rubix cube.” These guys are just dancing on a roof telling you to enjoy life and forget about the little issues you shouldn’t be worrying about.
The more I listen to it the more I love what these guys are doing. This is their first release so there’s not much else to say about them, other than this song being one of the most unique and inspiring sounds I’ve heard recently.
BLOOM is both aesthetically and sonically refreshing. It serves as meditation, therapy and motivation. Like most of the acts that I write about, I see WATER DAWGS making a real impact, pushing boundaries with their art. I can’t wait to see what they put out next… but I’ll be spinning BLOOM for a long time, especially when I need to clear my head.
