So, here we are in a new year and after a well deserved break - you know, the type necessary to fuel my creativity - I am back again with the reviews of music that give me that well needed buzz that is just so perfect in energy in order to spring us back into the mix of things and motivate us to make sure 2021 delivers a whole lot more than 2020 did. Nothing brings in the new year, in the way a jazzy, vibrationally accelerating tune does and as I turned on my mac this week I was greeted by such a track. Typical morning coffee, theme-tune of the start of my day, dancing around my kitchen style.
Maybe by Lo Boii, is that nu school funk sound that get us moving, it is the perfect union of RnB and electronic music. The track is fluid and idyllic, it is bouncy yet soothing at the same time, existing in perfectly synchronised extremes. With hints of influence of the present and past, the tune hits the listener with the smooth nostalgia of 90’s jazz and funk, yet also has the tones and a levelling energy typical of nu-electronic soul.
The New York duo, Aaron "Aalias" Kleinstub and Corey Latif, are absolutely astounding in what they do. They merge varieties of sounds so fluidly, it creates an almost transcendental experience. It is so easy to immerse yourself in their sound, as the tones and pitches they play with carry you on a journey of musical exploration, pulling on what sounds like modern jazz classics whilst somehow adding their unique visionary edge to their tunes. Of course, very tellingly, they are both individually experts in this game of music. Corey Latif is a Grammy Award-nominated artist whilst the duo have worked together to create hits for the likes of Rihanna, Usher and Bebe Rexha. The degree of quality that they work to is inescapably apparent in their tracks.
“This particular new wave neo-soul sound transmits through listeners, catapulting us along what feels like a delicately cosmic listening experience”
Maybe welcomes you in an ever-flowing liquescent strum of melodic, crisp twangs before encompassing you in a comforting bubble of bass, accompanied by beautifully reverbed, sleek vocals. This particular new wave neo-soul sound transmits through listeners, catapulting us along what feels like a delicately cosmic listening experience. This tune is typical new funk-soul, bright and zingy, this is the epitome of feel good music - soulful, poppy and smooth all at the same time. The vocals remain deeply enticing, building up the mood throughout track, warming the listener gradually until you are overcome by the sensuality of the tune itself. The lyrics, very much alike the beat, carry that same fresh energy that we need for the new year.
With themes of reflection, love and fresh perspectives, this is a futuristic collaboration of sound that is perfectly integrated for easy listening. As I personally believe underground and alternative RnB will gradually pick up momentum across this year, this is definitely one to add to the playlists. It the perfect soothing energy, made for your morning coffee, something to smoothly introduce you to the the day and start the engine of all the productivity we have offer. And we all want a bit of that in this new year. Maybe by Lo Boii is available to stream on all major platforms.
