Terreyl Fields is the latest newcomer from Miami, Florida to grace our ears. He released his first EP ‘FIRST HIT’ last Friday and this project feels like an energetic introduction to his electro sound.

In recent years, producers like Channel Tres and KAYTRANADA have been pioneers for a new, truly modern electro sound. Terreyl Fields' music shows his influence from established artists of alternative hip-hop/dance, which is, at times, hard to define. Yet, he still offers something fresh and new to the genre.

Fields takes his time to build a song’s atmosphere through lengthy intros, often letting the listener gage the tone before he drops into electro sounds. It becomes transportive and reminds me of late nights in the summer when parties start to hit their peak. The EP showcases how Fields likes to play around with his production, even experimenting with gentler moments in the breakdowns, particularly on SLICE SLIDE. His wordplay and flow enhance each track melodically, which I enjoyed most in BBY BOI, a futuristic spaced out ode to a lover.

Certain moments and songs on the EP really stand out like SPACING, which harnesses the definition of song’s title and wraps you in an oscillation of warped vocals and soulful electro sounds. All this punctuated by a solid kick drum, which develops into an upbeat hip-house track. All throughout the FIRST HIT, the tempos fluctuated and shifted, which kept me engaged as I found myself guessing what he would pull out of his metaphorical hat next.

There are some exciting and enjoyable moments on this EP, for sure. For an artist who began producing and recording less than a year ago, Fields will surely be on our radar as his skills and sound grow and develop.
