2021 may have been a year of uncertainties, but if there’s one thing we continued to have faith in, it’s disc jockey legend Gilles Petersons’ ability to scout out some fine musical artistry.
And some of the sounds we’ve been finding some serious selecta solace in, thanks to Peterson and his label Brownswood Recordings’ Future Bubblers scheme, belongs to that of the East Midlands-Electronic maestro, Nowsm.
Nowsm doesn’t hold back in his latest release, ‘Leave Your Circle’, an energetic 5 minute get-up-and-don’t-stop-moving track, injected with restlessly exciting beats and pulsing with ethereal energy.
Perhaps his most musically transcendental and technically determined contribution to the experimental and ambient scene yet, the track has already gained approval from the likes of BBC Radio 6/1xtra DJ’s Tom Ravencroft and Jamz Supernova and JAGUAR. Meanwhile, ‘Leave Your Circle’ was also featured in last month’s Bandcamp weekly, and is quickly gaining popular attention amongst radio listeners nationwide.
East Midlands Electronic Maestro
As a recent graduate of the Future Bubblers programme (and bearing an equally impressive degree in audio and music tech), this track seems to mark a pull away from some of his earlier releases. The hard work of those one-to-one mentoring sessions, provided by the bubblers programme, has certainly paid off. Stepping up his game with his use of samples and sounds, there is a heightened concentration and serious atmosphere to this track. Although, he still stays true to embedding his assorted influences and clear knowledge of genres, rarely settling for one.
On the first listen, it’s easy to miss, or take for granted, the attention to detail and technicality that exists as the secret weapon to Nowsm’s strikingly individual and multifarious sound. But the more you listen (which you’re bound to with this one!), the more you’ll find.
His live Brownswood Basement session is clear evidence of how natural the art of music production all comes to him, pulling off the whole track’s composition quite effortlessly, and marking his right to perform in this legendary space. No wonder he is gaining keen support from platforms such as NTS and BBC introducing, and we’re excited to see which part of the experimental landscape he looks to conquer next.
