Jazz Titans FloFilz and Alfa Mist Link Up For Grandiose New Cut 'Uteki'

On their wonderfully wistful new collaborative single ‘Uteki’, Berlin-based beatmaker FloFilz and UK Jazz extraordinaire Alfa Mist demonstrate effortless musical chemistry, moulding a nostalgic and grandiose atmosphere in the process. 

Amassing over 200 millions streams, FloFilz is quickly emerging as an prominent and pioneering figure within European Jazz and Hip Hop. A student of Classical and an exceptional violinist, Flo pays homage to his musical roots, which, combined with a passion for Jazz and admiration for icons like Madlib and J Dilla, constructs a sound pitched between 90s Hip Hop, Contemporary Jazz and Alternative R&B. As an avid fan of the UK Jazz scene, it’s no surprise to see the Belgium-born producer link up with one of British Jazz’s leading lights Alfa Mist, whose subtly irresistible 2021 album ‘Bring Backs’ solidified his status amongst the most talented composers and musicians that London has to offer.

Inspired by the Japanese translation of raindrops, ‘Uteki’ is perfect for late night contemplation and early morning motivation. The duo's musicality flows seamlessly throughout the near three minute runtime, alternating between lively piano inflections, soothing Rhodes and soulful brass. You can hear their impact of the legendary Hip Hop producers in the upbeat percussion, which would be as much at home in a 90s boom-bap track as this silky Jazz cut. The naturalistic, pacey kit gives the beat a strong rhythmic identity, allowing the listener to wondrously wallow in the serene melodies. The highly expressive instrumental performances are matched by Flo’s creamy production that flirts with Lo-Fi sensibilities, whilst upholding a soundscape brimming with vibrancy and warmth.
