Having a discussion about my taste in music with a friend the other day, I exclaimed “I like smoking a blunt, staring at the stars, talking about the meaning of life, existing in the moment, influenced by lo-fi” type hip hop. A very particular description. And of course, I do describe my taste as somewhat universal, however in that particular moment, I more or less was overcome with appreciation of music that put me in that mental headspace.
One of the artists that currently fall into this bracket would be London rapper, Kieron Boothe. With the release of his latest EP, Mr Invisible 2, he showcases a light, energetic flow infused within futuristic, jazzy notes scattered throughout all 5 tracks. There is an insane youthfulness to his flow, highlighted by the depths of the saxophone & piano elements that draw the tunes together with ultimate smoothness.
This EP follows Kieron’s Mr. Invisible 1, released October last year, with similar roots in rhythmic soul. The project holds a level of honesty, combined with snippets of light humour that combine seamlessly for easy listening, all whilst showcasing personal growth fluidly through the music. Mr. Invisible 2 remains authentic to the original concept of “not feeling seen, whilst seeing that as a superpower” and understanding advantages of being able to observe without interruption. The foundations of this concept remain more beautifully solid than ever though the latest release.
This project really showcases Kieron’s well-rounded artistry. It’s creative, youthful yet mature in sound. With Track 3, Stuck on Repeat being a personal favourite due to its relatable nature, rooted an honest angst with an uplifting “we move” feel. This EP can easily remain on repeat due to its ability to articulate a space in time that most of us feel and will remember on a deeper level. Mr. Invisible 2 is out now on all streaming platforms.
