Throughout the midst of the lockdown, we were rooted in the very harsh reality that called society to attention. For many of us, we had become accustomed to a state of affairs that created twangs of pain in society on a regular basis. The BLM movement, woke many a brand, organisation, individual up to the disparity of treatment based off race within our society. As the ferocity of the social activism has seemly dimmed across the last couple weeks, artistic expressions and reminders of the cause remain necessary truths that are highly appreciated and are pivotal to carrying through a message as we embark on what we hope to be a fairer future.

...artistic expressions and reminders of the cause remain necessary truths that are highly appreciated and are pivotal to carrying through a message as we embark on what we hope to be a fairer future.

In light of this I came across a very touching expression of the BLM movement by East London singer, Kemi Sulola. Justice, is a musical rendition of the activism that we have seen across the last 3 months. The tune is decorated in audio notes of protests, whilst Kemi’s delicate vocals spill through with a passion that boldly calls of change. There is a choir like feel to this tune, that reinforces the collective, community feel that is drawn from being just a perception of protest to being a real musical call of activism.

Kemi’s sound is reminiscent of R’n’B from the early 2010s, her voice carries a very particular type of innocence that is asserted in the maturity of raw emotion expressed in the theme of her music. There is a profound passion in her expression that creates a very palatable dynamic that creates a very distinct sound that draws pleasurable influence from 90’s R’n’B.

This track works as a beautiful expression of musical activism which vigorously coveys the cries of a community. There is a very obviously call to action throughout the tune, which serves a reminder of the individuals behind the movement, to the society as a whole.
