Mela - Stereo

If somebody made a film of this song, it would probably be a mix between Generation Z’s reinterpretation of one of Dario Argento’s movies and 80s cartoons. What really stands out of this Italo-disco song is that it’s so obviously emotional, yet playful, that it becomes inescapably magnetic.
Mela is an Anglo-Italian artist currently based in London. In her twenties, she moved to Bologna to study and soon got in touch with the city’s effervescent music environment. This song has been brought to life after a meticulous perusal of five unreleased synth-pop/Italo-disco demos produced in 1982. Mela and her producer Miles James modified, mastered and readapted these tracks to create this brilliant piece of music.
Let’s start with the story: of course, it has been constructed over a 6-year romance which eventually turned into a throbbing breakup. Those mixed feelings of falling out of love are excruciating and will inevitably mark Mela’s rebirth.
Stereo is the artist’s debut single and part of a double-sided autobiographic project which will be released later this year. The first part is an ode to her dual heritage and her time in the Emilian city; on the second side, she reencounters her evolution amid a very hard moment.

This track truly pays homage to 80s disco’s sound and stumbles into a similar aesthetic. There is a curious playful and heartstring-pulling magic that comes out of these synth progressions and dense vocals; the instrumental sections of the bridge really dominate this wiggling production and give this track a discrete light-hearted charm. Stereo is a real banger, infectious and fun, with a somewhat speechy feel and an indelible melody and tempo.
Remarkably, Mela made her entire upcoming EP independently, from the funding to the promotion which has allowed her to maintain complete creative control over it. It has been distributed through AWAL on the 21st of August and we’re going to hear a lot more about this young artist.

Se questa canzone Italo-disco fosse un film, sarebbe un mix tra un film di Dario Argento e un cartone animato anni 80. Quello che salta all’orecchio quando si ascolta per la prima volta questa traccia, è lo stile giocoso e allo stesso tempo emotivo che diventa subito magnetico.
Mela è un’artista Italo-britannica attualmente basata a Londra. All’inizio dei suoi vent’anni si trasferisce a Bologna per continuare gli studi e presto diventa abituée del prolifico ambiente musicale della capitale emiliana. ‘Stereo’ nasce da una scoperta quasi casuale di cinque tracce inedite prodotte nel 1982. Insieme al suo producer Miles James, decidono di analizzarle, mizarle e riprodurle fino a creare questo pezzo a dir poco brillante.
Partiamo dalla storia: ovviamente, come ogni produzione del genere che si rispetti, nasce dalle ceneri di una storia d’amore e dei suoi strascichi. Il dolore e la sofferenza forgiano la rinascita di una giovane donna che si scopre inevitablmente più forte, nonostante si ritrovi sola dopo sei anni di amore.
‘Stereo’ è la traccia debutto nonchè parte di un EP autobiografico suddiviso in due canzoni che verrà pubblicato a fine anno. Nella prima parte, ci si immergere nelle doppie radici dell'artista e nel suo vissuto a Bologna, la seconda ci racconta invece dell’evoluzione compiuta durante questo momento particolamente difficie. La canzone rende credibile omaggio alla disco anni 80 e intende replicare la medesima estetica musicale. Quello che colpisce è una curiosa combinazione tra gaiezza e sentimento che fuoriesce dall’alternanza tra progressioni synth e una voce leggera ma penetrante.
‘Stereo’ è uno di quei pezzi che si fanno riascoltare, è dimesso e al tempo stesso contagioso, grazie a melodia e tempo particolarmente convincenti. La parte strumentale risalta inequivocabilmente e rende questo pezzo rigoglioso, conferendogli un certo charme discreto.
E’ importante rimarcare che Mela si è occupata in toto della produzione dell’EP, dal finanziamento alla promozione, e questo le ha permesso di mantenere totale controllo creativo sulla stessa. Il 21 agosto, la traccia è stata distribuita da AWAL e non si può che confidare nel fatto che sentiremo presto parlare di questa giovane artista.
