UK R’n’B/soul has a very specific feel to it. It has a powerful way of magically transporting you to a very specific place. It’s deep, spiritual, clouded with a sombreness that puts you in all your feels. There is a deep yearning to its sound, a fruitful expression of emotion that is a hybrid form of Britishness, rooted in its  90’s foundations that had us blooming in the sounds of Sade & Omar. It takes me back to my childhood, a beautiful collaboration of roots & culture, mixed with all the influence of the 2000’s, fresh and nostalgic all at the same time.

I started working in events, around about 9 years ago, and through my journey in media I am very privileged to have come across some amazing talent who have blossomed to be the UK superstars today. One artist whom I have grown with is Kemi Ade, who essentially represents everything I love about British R’n’B. Authentic, honest & grounded, Kemi’s music, for me, signifies the most beautiful, wholesome sound, that is simply musically nourishing. There is an extraordinary solidity to her sound, that whilst deep, still remains light and fluid. Her vocals are smooth and silky yet remain truthfully grounded in reality but still remaining all the more soothing for listeners.

Authentic, honest & grounded, Kemi’s music, for me, signifies the most beautiful, wholesome sound, that is simply musically nourishing.

Kemi’s latest release 5ADAY encapsulates this sound. As healthy to listen to as the track name emits, the tune is a beautiful structured. It is delicate and strong simultaneously, sexy and seductive whilst nurturing. The tune remains as fulfilling as the artist herself. Across the years, I am a fan who has been privileged to witness the growth and expansion of Kemi Ade as an artist, her lo-fi sound, touching deeper places than what you would usually expect of the genre, drawing listeners in with her deeply soulful foundations.

Kemi has encapsulated British Black Girl Magic in this tune and I am simply empowered by the subtle authenticity of her sound. It is artistically great, loveable and fierce all at the same time. Perfect weekend or easy evening listening. Especially as the cosy months dawn in on us, this is definitely an artist we should incorporate into our playlists. 5ADAY is out now on all major streaming platforms.
